Story

On the 27th November 2013 it will be 10 years since Ben passed away and i didn't feel that i could let the anniversary pass without marking it in some special way. When my friend Sarah said that she planned to walk the Camino de Santiago, one of the ancient pilgrims routes i said "i'll come with you!" This Camino route runs from St. Jean Pied de Port in France, up over the Pyrenees and across northern Spain to Santiago de Compostela - a total of 500 miles. I would love to raise £1 per mile, i.e. a total of £500

Camino completed!

14th November 2013
Sarah and i set out from St. Jean Pied de Port on the 13th September and arrived in Santiago de Compostela on the 23rd October. We walked every step of the way, carrying our backpacks - neither of us had ever done something like this before! The walk was challenging in parts - physically and mentally, but we thoroughly enjoyed it! When times were tough i thought about Ben and thought, no i won't give in, i'm doing this for Ben. It is tradition to take a stone to leave at the Cruz de Ferro (iron cross) so i'd taken a stone from the beach at Dalmore, Isle of Lewis, where Ben is buried and carried with me, in my rucksack. I reached the Cruz de Ferro early in the morning in heavy mist. It was a very touching and atmospheric moment as i left the stone with Ben's name and dates of birth and death at the foot of the cross. I was able to get my compostela (the certificate you receive for completing the walk) dedicated to Ben - a very tearful but proud moment.
